JOB SUMMARY
A Health & Safety Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of employees within an organization. This position involves developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety policies, procedures, and programs that comply with local, national, and international regulations. The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for minimizing workplace hazards, preventing accidents, and promoting a culture of safety.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reports to the Vice President, Human Resources
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibility of the Health & Safety Manager is to ensure that Branch locations are in compliance with all H&S, vehicle/transportation, and daily company safety standards.  Responsibilities include policy development, compliance and reporting, risk assessment, management and educational training.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
 
  • Manage site safety audits to make sure offices and warehouse areas meet safety standards and offer areas for improvement that are documented with a follow-up plan.
  • Ensure the jobs being performed are following company and industry safety standards by performing site safety audits, documenting findings, and following up on potential issues. This includes job hazard/safety analysis (JHA/JSA) and communications to the workers on site.
  • Ensure workers have access to and are using proper PPE for identified hazards. Carry a supply of routine PPE, various blank forms, and other necessary items for vehicle stock.
  • Ensure any required permits (Hot Work, etc.) are completed. If not, assist the worker to properly complete the required paperwork before allowing the job to continue and before leaving the jobsite.
  • Perform job site walks with Operations as necessary to write site-specific health & safety plans as needed by and for the Branches.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents and prepare a written report and make recommendations for corrective actions. Additionally lead IRT meetings, as necessary.
  • Manage Safety Committee Program working with field leaders and technicians to understand areas of improvement and convert those to action plans that are communicated to the company.
  • Implement and manage the Good Catch/Near Miss Program.
  • Maintain and monitor training records and/or manage them consistently with existing   procedures. Ensure that Branches are keeping employees’ current with all safety related documentation.
  • Responsible for conducting the New Hire Safety Orientation, training and ensuring 100% compliance. Provide and write SOP’s when needed.
  • Work with field leaders and HR team to identify trends and ensure that corrective actions are implemented and followed up as needed.
  • Develop a safety meeting program with the Branch Managers.  This includes working with Managers to conduct safety meetings (minimum monthly), safety stand-downs as needed and a Safety Committee to build/ increase field personnel involvement and communication.
  • Serve as an H&S liaison with customers to help operations achieve the goals of both the company and the customers that we work for.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in health & safety regulations.  Serve as a regulatory resource throughout the company.
  • Performance of other duties and responsibilities as required by management.
  • Up to 50% travel.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree or 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a H&S role.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of H&S regulations in a technical field such as public health, safety, or industrial/field services.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with unstructured problems that require defensible decisions on complex safety and regulatory matters.
  • Use of common software tools.
  • Ability to clearly communicate in verbal and written form
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • This position is considered light work - exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the employee sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work
  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer screen
  • Frequently required to maintain a static position, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
  • The work environment is typical office or administrative work. Work environment is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
  • Will be required to travel up to 50% to various locations.
